Nashoba senior to take his talents to the collegiate level next year
By Steve Kendall (Wicked Local)
BOLTON: When Charlie Butler was 9-years-old, he visited Chuck Schoolcraft about receiving pitching lessons in the hopes he could someday develop the skills to become an elite pitcher. Eight years later, Butler has achieved that goal, as he has become one of the elite high school pitchers in Central Massachusetts.
Due to his efforts, the Nashoba Regional senior and Marlboro resident has accepted the challenge of proving himself at another level, as Butler signed his National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Maine, where he will play for the Black Bears’ baseball program.
“This is a dream for me to be able to play college baseball at the Division 1 level,” Butler said in the school’s media center. “I have been working toward this goal for a long time, and I am excited about attending the University of Maine.”
Maine coach Steve Trimper and his staff heavily recruited Butler. It was deserved, as Butler was amongst the Central Mass. leaders in both pitching and batting last year. As a junior, Butler hit .405 with six home runs and 22 runs batted in, while posting an 8-2 record with a 2.31 ERA, five complete games, and 78 strikeouts in 64 innings pitched. Butler, the son of Charles and Laurel Butler of Marlboro, said Maine had been on the top of his college list since he was 13. That was the year he played AAU baseball for Jeff Plympton, who pitched for the Boston Red Sox organization as well as the University of Maine.
“That inspired me to want to play for Maine, so when they started recruiting me, I knew it was where I wanted to go,” Butler said. “I loved the atmosphere the school, the culture of the baseball program, and the academics they offer. It’s a perfect fit for me.”
Plympton was not the only influence on Butler’s desire to play Division 1 college sports. His cousin, Bobby Butler, was a standout hockey player at Marlboro before heading to the University of New Hampshire. He currently plays for the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators.
Butler said that watching his cousin’s work ethic throughout middle school, high school, and college inspired him to push himself to a higher level as well.
“I never saw anyone work as hard as Bobby did, and I saw how his hard work paid off for him,” Butler said. “Seeing that just showed me what it took to make yourself a better athlete.”
Butler put in the time, attending pitching lessons, batting lessons, playing AAU ball. He then made the choice to attend Nashoba Regional rather than Marlboro, seeing it as an opportunity to push himself academically, socially, and athletically.
He said the decision to school choice to Nashoba was “the best decision” he has made. “Nashoba has challenged me to be better at everything I do,” Butler said. “Coach Schoolcraft never let me be satisfied with what I was, and neither did the teachers. Everyone pushed me – my coaches, my teachers, my friends, my teammates. I thank all of them for helping me along the way. I am not here without them.”
Schoolcraft, who has been involved with coaching baseball for well over 20 years, lauded Butler for what he has accomplished. “Charlie struggled a lot when he started with me, but he never stopped working – you always knew Charlie would give his best effort every day, even when he was young,” Schoolcraft said. “I have never encountered any high school player in all my years who was as committed as Charlie was or worked harder than Charlie has. What he has done is impressive.”
Added Nashoba’s Director of Athletics Tania Rich: “Charlie is one of the most competitive athletes we have here, but he is also one of the nicest kids we have. We are proud of him.”

CLINTON, Massachusetts -- Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass) of Nashoba High School signed a National Letter of Intent with coach Steve Trimper and committed to the University of Maine baseball.
Butler, who is 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, is a right-handed pitcher who can also play first base. He will serve as captain of his team this spring.
